5 Reference Resources for Developers

Every developer needs some reference now and then. Whether you're dealing with a new problem you've never encountered before, learning a new scripting language, or you just can't remember which function you need, these web sites will help you get the job done.

1. Stack Overflow

   Perhaps the single greatest forum for answering development questions, Stack Overflow is a free Q&A site about programming, in any language, on any platform. Usually you can just search for your question and someone else has asked it already. If not, you can submit a question, and you don't even have to register.

2. php.net

   PHP help, straight from the source. Excellent for getting information on a specific function or language feature, it also allows user comments. Documentation is available in many languages and covers language syntax, features, add-ons, functions, and more.

3. W3Schools

   This site has great reference information for HTML4, HTML5, XHTML, CSS2, CSS3, JavaScript, XML, ASP, and much more. With "Try It Yourself" examples, practical explanations, and multiple reference lists, it's a great resource for web developers of any skill and experience level.

4. jQuery Docs

   The complete reference to the "write less, do more" JavaScript library. Complete function reference to the jQuery API and jQuery UI. Also several general informative pages like FAQ, Downloads, and Tutorials. Community discussion is also available at the bottom of most pages.

5. MySQL Documentation

   The official documentation for the world's most popular open source database allows you to get information on the various aspects of MySQL, filtered by version. Plenty of cross-links ensure that you can reference every aspect of whatever you're looking up with minimal searching.
